A Hard Decision by Westley Thomas is a book about how the lives of the veterans were affected by the Viet Nam war. It was very interesting and I found that it was hard to put the book down until I finished it. I was anxious to know how it would end. William and Steve endured so mush negatively in Viet Nam and especially after being captured. It was saddening to learn that both William and Steve were killed here on the streets in our country.It was hard to digest what the veterans endured in Viet Nam, then come home to a society that did not care. They had to make adjustments to so many obstacles including injustice and racism.I felt so sorry for the wives, Zera and Margarite. They were trying to deal with their husbands PTSD/other problems and trying to live normal married lives. These problems tremendously affected the children also. The book was like every turn you made, you bumped into someone affected by the Viet Nam war. The book was well written and I would recommend other veterans read it as well as the general public.

The play is smothered in romance, forgiveness and tragedy. It begs the reader to ask what situation is worse” that of war or of crime.

What an incredible story from the lenses of an African American Vietnam Vet. The the inequities those solders had to deal, the effects it had on there lives after. This is the untold truth of the “real” American Patriots.
Having returned from Viet Nam in December of 1968, I was able to relate to the author's point of view. When we returned, nothing was the same. Life required that many of us recalculate our options. Many of us searched and found a strong support system but many others were faced with Hard Decisions. I think that the author did a fine job of illustrating how this war affected families. The reader is able to experience some of the emotional strain this family went through. I strongly recommend this book be read by military veterans as well as the general public.Richard from Virginia
This book is captivating. It is a well written book by Westley Thomas. The characters are faced with tough decisions, which keep you engaged throughout the whole book. Not to mention the harsh reality that veterans and their families face when they go off to war. A great read! I will be checking out more books from this author.
A Hard Decision by Mr Westley Thomas is a terrific, meaningful and easy read. One of many important lessons this book captures is: life truly is unpredictable and filled with Hard Decisions we all must make. This book is a fine example of how things don't always go according to plan and sometimes our pasts have a tendency to resurface when we least expect it. I found this book to reflect the true meaning of conflict in interpersonal relationships, especially during a time when the country is at war and so many lives are interrupted and adversely affected. The book was so very realistic depicting what often happens as a result of our young men going off to war to face a daunting enemy, only to return home to find that nothing is the same as it was when he departed. The book was riveting and held my interest through the many turns that the author excellently depicted throughout the story of War and Love and the turbulent conflict that develops from one scene to the next. I found the book to be so well written and heart-wrenching and the ending was so surprising. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has a heart and an ounce of compassion for the plight of someone who is forced to experience such a profound flurry of emotions that this great book takes you through. I definitely give it a Thumbs Up and 5 Stars ! JLW

The Vietnam War for America was unfavorable. Blacks drafted were on the front lines and those having a degree were able to be officers. Racism was clearly apart of the military life before and during the (VW). The Narrator takes us on a journey that forces the characters into "Hard Decisions", life seems to be so unfair. One may ask why does GOD permit bad things to happen to "Good" people. Very compelling, a must read, well done by Westly Thomas. BC
This story is refreshing in how it takes the female/civilian perspective into account when considering the effects of war on the soldier. The hardships start with the difficulties of saying goodbye at deployment and they continue years after William is back home. The story is compelling and heart wrenching, made even more so because it is written by a veteran with first hand knowledge of a soldiers return from war to civilian life. I would recommend this play be staged in high schools as a great introduction to the longstanding impact of war on everyday people.
This book is a testimony to every man who serve in Vietnam it show's the spirit and strength of every human being,who came home to deal with there personal and family issue,and healing of there own wounds. good job wes Marine.

This book bought the hash world of war and hash world of a country fighting it own community that struggling for its equal rights to the reader.
I know the author and had began to read it before it was published. Once it was published I bought a copy and began reading the book. Once I got into the book I was unable to put it down. It was interesting and the book took me for a ride. I enjoyed the book and purchased a copy for my mother. She also enjoyed the book. The ending was very surprising. The book was also easy reading.
The book is excellent chapter of what happens to soldier when they come home after serving in Vietnam. many have a hard time adjusting to life, and the problem that confront them, the author Wesley Thomas paint a picture of how we as soldier are treaty in the family problems we inherited. A Hard Decision is a riveting story of the circumstances and consequences of War, and how lives can be drastically and forever changed by the many random events that take place as a result of this war. It is a story that delves into the lives of the characters, and details how they deal with events that prove to be completely out of their control, and how they can be forced to make a life-altering decision, that comes about, as a result of these tragic events. It is a must-read, that will immerse you into the characters’ world. I’ve read it over and over again!

A Hard Decision This is an outstanding book "A Must Read" As a Veteran of Vietnam, I can relate. As a fellow Marine and a personal friend this book has touched me. Each and every day as a black man we have to make decisions, it is a way of life now. Westley and myself, encountered an experience back in 1968, coming home on a weekend driving through the state of Maryland because we were black we were pulled over, and we had just served in Vietnam and by the grace of God they let us continue our journey after they called and confirmed with the base where we were stationed at. We were both Sargents in the Marines Corps, we both deal with PTSD. Sargent Robert Jameson, USMC 1965-1969

This is a book you will find hard to put down. If you never lived this story, your fortunate, but I bet you know someone who has. Sad to say that most supposedly strong men end up taking their own lives. I happen to see a live reenactment of the book and I got chills anticipating each scene, and I already read the book. I can't wait to read the sequel, and a movie would be fantastic.

I have read the book and was totally surprised by the ending. I served with Westley in Vietnam and can relate to the situation in the book, totally enjoyed it.
I like that the book included love, military and the role it played in the characters lives. I also liked that the author included his hometown which also played a role in the story.
This book tells the true story of this great American. I do believe everyone should make it there business and get a copy.
I have known Westley since high school and he is a great friend and person. He has written a riveting story. As a Vietnam Nam vet I can relate to many of the situations affecting the characters in the story. A must read for all Vets from any war. Hopefully he will write something else one day. This book takes you on a journey from the heart and soul of a true American hero. It is a complex but beautiful story that personifies the effects of war and the hard decisions facing soldiers and the people who love them. The Author: Wesley Thomas, has a spirit of servitude that is exemplified by his years of service to our Country and most notably the guidance and assistance he’s imparted on our Veterans. In addition to writing this wonderful book, Wes personifies what it means to be a Marine. He cares about people and has helped many Marines including myself. His friendship is a blessing. As a former Marine who served in Vietnam, I found Wes' book very meaningful. His book reveals the trials and tribulations of the Vietnam War and its aftereffects. It depicts what servicemen and women go through while in combat and while prisoners of war. As much as they are thinking of loved ones and relationships back home - soldiers are constantly worried about air strikes, ambushes, booby traps, becoming a POW and death. For those who come home - home has changed in many ways and adjustment is very difficult. Wes expresses all of this very well. A Hard Decision is a compelling story about the Vietnam War and how it affected both those who served and their loved ones. The story has several tragedies both in Vietnam and at home. Wes is able to communicate the fear and sorrow felt because of all the tragedies. He is also able to communicate the resilience, strength and courage of everyone involved. Written in a play format with scenes and stage directions Wes makes the story come alive. A Hard Decision speaks to social, political and cultural issues in many ways, but particularly, by creating a poignant tragedy that is all too real. Wes is a fine story teller. Childhood sweethearts are separated by war. And nearly kept apart in a hard decision is the bases of this storyline. One of the very basic storylines, A HARD DECISION should not be considered a simple read whereas it was created to explore matters of the heart in the most of all despairing situation. Using war as a backdrop the primary plot falls victim to the lack of communication within our society where fairness has no place to exist. Severing in Vietnam myself and losing both legs on the battlefield my personal reaction to A HARD DECISION is that the circumstances the main characters are faced with can be considered a casualty of war. In a sense collateral damage. To speak of the events of the story would play into a reader’s tarnished expectations of the wounded-returning warriors. War brings painful scars to be faced but more than often the scars of love are considered unrelated or minimal and find no empathy. The material itself requires two reads to fully understand the seriousness of its underlining factors. It is a must-read that will open the eyes of those who have not experienced war and for those who have seen war would appreciate the insight the author, a Vietnam Veteran himself brings to the forefront. I know Westley Thomas for a long time since growing up in West Brighton Staten Island, NY. We went to same high school together before i transfer to another high school. We were in the military but not in the same branch of service. We been friends many years. I think Westly book was a great achievement in writing this wonderful book call Hard Decision.
What an amazing story.Very well written by my friend Westley Thomas.Every part of the story was amazing and had my interest every step of the way.Reading it all the way to the end reminded me of my younger brother and his childhood sweetheart.He joined th Marines and they planned on getting married when he returned home.Unfortunately he lost his life in Vietnam and her heart was so broken.I am sure there are more coincidences related to this story.Westley is an excellent writer and a great story teller.Can't wait for his next book.Thank you Westley and Yvonne for being my good friends.Semper Fi my brother.
This is an amazing book written from the perspective of two veterans. It is a love story showing that the conflicts of war affects many who are left at home. It is written as a play and I would love to see its theatrical interpretation.

The Hard Decision is a book about Westley Thomas' battles in Vietnam, his heroic actions and his achievements. The book gave an intense real life insight about the war in Vietnam. I recommend everyone read this book.
Another great representation in revealing the leadership, the perseverance, the fighting spirit, the power of love and hope of the men and woman in uniform. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas has truly brought to life the after-math many service members face throughout history in regard to love, finding peace, helping other vets, and over coming challenges within oneself.
This is a excellent book for us to read. It highlights some of the many challenges faced by our veterans. Westley Thomas is my cousin and he counseled, and assisted me with my VA PTSD claim. This book illuminates the varied complexities of war. The reader is allowed to peek into the individual lives of each character and get to know them at a personal level. It feels like you’re involved in a conversation about some scandalous gossip, which gets the pages turning. I couldn’t put the book down and I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Meeting Wes Thomas five years ago was like entering a new world as he pulled me into a society of Vietnam vets. As a World War II and Korea War I thought I had seen and knew the complexities of war. Then I came upon a copy of A HARD DECISION by none other than Wes Thomas. His novel read as if it were a bio. By mid-read, I could sense what was coming,,but couldn't stop reading. After- wards I wondered how often Wes' novel was the stuff of real life, yet unwritten. So many HARD DECISIONS are still there. I urge you to keep writing, West! Ted Britton
Dragon City National story to find my friend this book is excellent if I can give it $10 I would I read it twice I read it front and I even read it backwards I would recommend it to anyone I think it's a good reference to the balance of life itself I really don't have much worse to say other than what I just say what I would recommend it to anyone
A Hard Decision, A recommended read. As first cousins, I had an inside read on his character and ability to help people along the way. Westley answered the call to duty when the Vietnam war started. He served honorably from 1966 to 1968. Westley is still helping people with problems from the war.

Westley Thomas the author, wrote a heart wrenching portrayal of what many Vietnam Vets go through after returning home; me included. This book highlights the emotional turmoil of trying to pick where you left off in civilian life. I wholeheartedly applaud my comrade in arms for authoring this amazing book.

A book written by Westley Thomas is current today as it was during the Vietnam Era, because it shines a light on ( PTSD) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its effects on returning war veterans, their families and friends. You will laugh and cry at the scenarios described in the book. Most importantly, at this present moment veterans and their families are experiencing what the characters in the book experienced during and after the Vietnam war, which was and presently is, Love, Loss and Hard Decisions... When I read this book, it was hard to put down. It tells a story of what was, is,.and will always be, as long as we have war. I appreciate that Wes put it out there, for all to read.
This book was interesting and fun to read. I enjoyed getting to know the characters in the book and the twist and turns in the plot. This book made me feel that sometimes life can be unpredictable and you may not always know what comes your way. However, what you can do is enjoy and appreciate the good things you have now in the present. I recommend this book to others, especially those who are veterans. They would definitely relate and understand how war can change families and lives in many different ways.

This book is based on the experiences of Westley Thomas in the Vietnam War. There is conflicting views on how the war was carried out. This book is more on the side of the United States's government justification of the war. On the surface, the War was a complex endeavor. To be straightforward, the War benefited the American government despite the large amount of casualties (1,353,000 deaths) that could have been avoided. This book shows how the American government misled the people into believing the war was just. One of the names of those that died in vain in the Vietnam War was Larry Thompson, an African-American.
